What is CEREC?
CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic, is a highly advanced technology that enhances and reconstructs dental restorations. This technology makes use of computer-assisted design (CAD) as well as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), making it possible to provide tooth restorations in a single appointment. Through this revolutionary method, patients no longer have to wait for several days for their final restorations, such as veneers and crowns, to be fabricated. Using CEREC, the finished products are tooth-colored and metal-free, maintaining the natural appearance of the smile while providing strength and function as well. Our cosmetic dental practice can now provide you with ceramic restorations in just a single appointment using state-of-the-art CEREC technology!
What happens during a CEREC procedure?
Before anything else, Dr. Smith will determine whether or not the CEREC technology is right for your dental situation. Once your treatment options are reviewed, your teeth will then be prepared for the restoration process by removing any decay or the weakened dental enamel.
Once the preparations have been made, our team will acquire a three-dimensional image of the affected tooth using a digital camera scan. Known as a digital impression, this 3-D image will be the basis in creating the dental restoration, avoiding the mess of taking a traditional impression. The CEREC software will then convert this image into a 3-D virtual model of the affected tooth.
The milling unit will create the customized dental appliance for your tooth, which will be based on the original shade of your teeth. The appropriate ceramic block will then be placed in the milling unit, which will begin to create the custom restoration in a few minutes. Finally, the finished restoration will be tested on the patient for proper fit and bite, and will be bonded and polished into the prepared tooth. The entire process takes place in a single appointment.
What are the benefits of CEREC technology?
The CEREC technology allows patients to save time and cost since the entire dental restoration procedure can be completed in a single visit. It also gets rid of the need for messy impressions, temporary restorations and in-between appointments, and metal-based restorations. Moreover, it saves much of the natural structure of the affected tooth, restoring the beauty and function of the patient’s smile.
